Meet the Orthodontist


James J Maginnis, DMD, MS

Dr. Maginnis, a native of Charleston, SC, received his BA degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Afterwards, he continued his schooling, earning his DMD degree at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, and completing his Orthodontic Residency (MSortho) at Saint Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education.

Dr. Maginnis is currently a member of numerous organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, American Board of Orthodontics, Southern Association of Orthodontists, SC Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, SC Dental Association, and the Coastal District of the SC Dental Association. He also participates in the Hilton Head/Bluffton Dental Study Club, and the Hilton Head/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. He was the president of the Hilton Head/Bluffton Dental Study Club from 2003-2008, has participated as a science fair judge since 2005, and was board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 2007. Dr. Maginnis is a certified Invisalign provider, earning his certification in 2001, and has been practicing in the Hilton Head/Bluffton area since locating here in 2001.

In regards to his practice philosophy, Dr. Maginnis says, "Our mission is to deliver the highest quality orthodontic treatment with a personal touch. We apply the golden rule each day with our patients and our lives.

"I love seeing the results and the difference we make in people's lives. Seeing the transformations in the smiles and personalities is a real highlight of my job. We're able to treat children, teens and adults in a relaxed setting where our patients and parents are like family.

"Our office has a commitment to improving our environment and conservation. We recycle trash and both of our offices are Green Power Users with Palmetto Electric Cooperative."

Dr. Maginnis' family includes his wife, Mary, daughter, Vivienne, and their Boykin spaniel named Chessie. For those who don't know, Boykins are a South Carolina breed of birddog and have become the state dog. When he is not working with patients, Dr. Maginnis enjoys kayaking, fishing, hunting, scuba diving, playing the guitar, cooking, camping, wakeboarding, snowboarding, traveling, and getting involved in local community events.
